First person – short
I’m Tom Gates. For more than 35 years I have performed, studied and composed music.
At the University of Miami as a guitarist, I studied jazz with brilliant teachers such as Jerry Coker and Dan Haerle, played with future giants Pat Metheny and Jaco Pastorius, and discovered the amazing instrument the steel drum.
Moving to Phoenix in 1980, I continued on both guitar and steel drum. I played at the Telluride jazz festival and recorded with the Beach Boys. Thousands of gigs at clubs, hotels, restaurants, resorts, schools, concerts and festivals. A move to San Francisco. Great memories and friends. A move to San Diego. More music and memories. Time and recognizing my roots brought me back to Phoenix and I continue to play and record with a wonderful collection of fine musicians.
Since my teenage years I have studied and researched the mysteries of music and the arts. I couldn’t help myself. There is great energy beneath the surface of life and music helps to organize and make sense of it all.
